What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye. Normally, the cornea and lens have a smooth surface that curves equally in all directions. This helps focus light rays sharply onto the retina at the back of the eye. If the cornea or lens is not smooth or evenly curved, light rays are not refracted (bent) correctly. Doctors call it refractive error.

People can have astigmatism along with other refractive errors, such as the following:

  • Myopia
  • Farsightedness

Astigmatism symptoms
