What is dry eye?

The eyes need tears to stay healthy and undisturbed. When the eyes do not produce enough tears, there is a condition called dry eye. Dry eye also occurs when tears do not have the right mix of elements or when the tear film is not what it should be.

Dry Eye Symptoms

These are some of the symptoms of dry eye.

  •  Feel itching and burning in the eyes.
  • You have a scratchy or gritty feeling inside your eye.
  • You have blurred vision, especially when reading
  • There are lines of mucus inside or around the eyes.
  • You have red or irritated eyes. This is especially the case when you are in a windy place or near cigarette smoke.
  • Wearing contact lenses causes you pain.
  • He has a lot of tears.

It may sound strange to you that having a lot of tears in your eyes is a sign of “dry eye.” But the eyes produce more tears when they are irritated by dry eye.

Causes of dry eye

People tend to produce fewer tears as they age. Both men and women can suffer from dry eye. However, it is more common in women, particularly those who have already gone through menopause.

These are other causes for dry eye.

  • Some diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, thyroid disease, and lupus.
  • Blepharitis (when the eyelids become inflamed or red)
  • Entropion (eyelids fold inward); ectropion (eyelids fold outward)
  • Being in places with smoke, wind, or very dry weather
  • Looking at a computer screen for a long time, reading, and other activities that reduce blinking
  • Wearing contact lenses for a long time
  • Undergo refractive eye surgery, such as LASIK
  • Taking certain medications, such as:
  • Diuretics (water pills) for high blood pressure
  • Beta-blockers, for heart problems or high blood pressure
  • Allergy and cold medications (antihistamines)
  • Sleeping pills
  • Anxiety and antidepressant medication
  • Heartburn medications

Dry eye diagnosis
